DECEMBER 15, 2014
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
INTERNATIONAL DAY TO END VIOLENCE AGAINST SEX WORKERS
NEW BRUNSWICK, NEW JERSEY
The New Jersey Red Umbrella Alliance (NJRUA) is holding their first public event on December 17, 2014. NJRUA is a new grassroots organization dedicated to promoting the human rights of sex workers living and working in New Jersey. We believe all forms of sex work should be decriminalized and that the voices of sex workers should be heard when deciding on policies that impact them. The media portrays murders in the sex work community as either sensationalized stories with (occasionally false) accounts of human trafficking and drug addiction, or their murders are brushed over as unimportant with an aside that this should be expected for someone working in the field - violence should never be expected.
The event will be held at Christ Church (5 Paterson Street) in New Brunswick, New Jersey between 6PM and 8:30PM. There will be a candle light vigil to honor workers around the world who have experienced violence or been murdered at the hands clients, cops serial killers and other perpetuators of violence. Participants will then break up into three concurrent workshops lead by various community leaders: (1) How criminalization impacts violence (2) how violence impacts workers based on gender & race and (3) dealing with adverses stress and spiritual healing. Spanish translation will be offered throughout the evening.
